Durham Region VDubFest was welcomed by the .Scarborough Volkswagen MidTown Location on Sunday July 28th, 2019. By far the most recognizable VDub was Herbie the Love Bug. Am I the only one that gets giddy when I see Herbie? Maybe. Maybe not. Otherwise, for those with a general appreciation for all things Volkswagen there was plenty to see. There were beetles, vans, and campers. Most in the vintage to heritage category. Check out more photo's from the show below.

Let me start off by saying that they weren't really quilts. They were more the shape and size of square pillow covers. Then, there were some critics on site who were voicing their disappointment that they were machine quilted and not hand sewn. Aside from those criticisms this is a very purple exhibition of quilted works by various individuals across North American. If I overheard the staff on site correctly what is on display at Black Creek Pioneer Village, for this weekend only, is a third of the collection. With the other pieces traveling in two additional exhibitions. The contents of these exhibits are a result of the Prince Cherrywood Challenge. A competition created by a fabric company that hand dyes its own materials. All the entrants started from the same base of inspiration (Prince) and color palette (purple). Overall, the Prince Tribute Tour Exhibit screams purple. Yet, it allows for the subtlety of the quilter's voices to whisper between the stitches . In case you didn't know, the Prince Tribute Tour Exhibit was a mere fraction of the size of the much larger Quilts of the Creek exhibit that was also taking place this past weekend at Black Creek Pioneer Village. They were just seeewwwww beautiful. Below are some close-up pics of these amazing works of art,. I'm not a person that generally goes shopping for brand new handbags or purses. The last time I bought a brand new one was when I was 16 years old (several decades ago).
I had forgotten about it in the time it takes to watch a movie in a small town cinema. Placed so securely by my feet that I walked out without it. I doubt very much I will be able to forget about this statement piece though. Especially, when it is already garnering compliments from complete strangers. Oddly enough it's men (a doorman and a bus driver) that are acknowledging the perfection of my accessory choice. This is the ONLY bag for me. Thank you ALDO! Will Bowes was on stage July, 22nd, 2019 at the Drake Underground. Canadian Music Week signed the Keychange 50:50 pledge to achieve gender parity by 2022.
What is Keychange? Keychange is an international campaign which invests in emerging talent whilst encouraging music festivals and conferences to sign up to a 50:50 gender balance pledge by 2022. Keychange is led by PRS Foundation, supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, in partnership with Musikcentrum Öst, Reeperbahn Festival, Iceland Airwaves, BIME, Tallinn Music Week, Way Out West, Liverpool Sound City and Mutek. In 2018 we increased that number to 31%, a year-over-year increase of 22%. In 2019, 41% of CMW's festival artists were women or bands led by women. This represents a 31% overall increase from 2018. We are extremely proud of the progress we've made and look forward to meeting our goal of 50/50 gender equality at Canadian Music Week by 2022. To date, nearly 200 music festivals and conferences have taken the Keychange 50:50 pledge. CMW is proud to be a part of this incredibly important initiative and we look forward to continuing to promote equality within the music industry for many years to come. The Yogen Früz Brain Project is a large-scale, outdoor exhibit that brings brain health, art and imagination to Nathan Phillips Square. It will be on site from June 2nd - December 31rst. Funds raised through the project are donated to the Baycrest Foundation, the fundraising arm of Baycrest Health Sciences, a global leader in brain health and aging.
Now am I the only one thinking that the most obvious brain is missing? I'm talking about the one that should be titled "Brain Freeze". After all Yogen Früz is an alternative to ice cream. When eating or gulping a frozen treat too quickly in this summer heat brain freeze is the most likely outcome. The most logical idea would be to depict "Brain Freeze" as an iceberg. According to popular opinion (despite scientifc evidence stating otherwise) most North Americans believe we only use 10% of our brains. Coincidentally, an ice berg only has 10% of its volume above water! So, if Yogen Früz came to me one day and said "Cheryl, here's your brain. Do with it what you will." Basically, I would create an iceberg by painting the top 10% white, the bottom 90% a crystal clear blue. Obviously, there is more to my idea but I don't want to give the whole berg away. In the meantime, the Yogen Früz Brain Project at Nathan Phillips Square is well worth a visit.. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to read the labels describing how the artists brains worked while they were coming up with their creations for this exhibit.
